Psalm 9
"The nations have sunk in the pit that they made. In the net that they hid, their own foot has been caught. Yahweh has made himself known. He has executed judgment. The wicked are snared in the work of their own hands. Higgaion (הִגָּיוֹן). Selah" - Psalm 9:15-16
In these verses, David pictures the nations sinking into a pit of their own making and being caught in a net they themselves have hid (v. 15). At the same time, God makes himself known and executes judgment for his people (v. 16). This is a matter of praise and thanksgiving for the righteous (v. 1).
Many have chosen the path of money, sex, and power and to worship at the seven idols of self, sex, science, the state, stuff, sport, and substances. Writers, artists, and philosophers have promoted secular humanism, Marxism, nihilism, existentialism, postmodernism, and the new spirituality, worldviews that lead people astray from the truth of the gospel of Christ. In places like sub-Saharan Africa and China, Christians are brutally persecuted. This is just a quick summary of what the nations, led by sinful, rebellious people, do. But the nations will be caught in their own net, and God will make himself known clearly and unmistakably. He will execute justice for his people. The day is coming.
Father, I praise you and thank you that your justice is coming. May your people continue to place their hope and trust in you. Warn the nations through your people so that some may turn away from the world and towards you before it is too late. Thank you for the resurrection, ascension, and session of Jesus. We know he is about to return. Let your justice prevail. In Jesus' name, amen.
