A Valuable Cornerstone

Isaiah 28

"Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, 'Behold, I am founding/establishing in Zion, a stone (אֶבֶן), a tried and tested (בֹּ֫חַן) stone, a valuable (יָקָר) cornerstone (פִּנָּה), a sure foundation (מוּסָד). Whoever believes/has trust (אמן) will not be in a hurry/give way.'" - Isaiah 28:16

Here Yahweh through the prophet Isaiah (700 bc) reveals that he is laying a foundation stone in Zion. Whoever believes in this foundation stone will not be in a hurry/give way when judgment comes. We know from the New Testament that this foundation stone is Jesus.

"...[A]s it is written, 'Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense. And whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.'" - Romans 9:33

The application for us is to place our trust in God's foundation stone, Jesus, and to keep doing so. Sometimes it is difficult to keep trusting in someone we can't see. But that's where faith comes in. Jesus has come once, and he has promised to come again. Can we trust Jesus? This is the big question for all of us.

Father, help us to believe in the foundation stone you have set up, Jesus. You have informed us very clearly that judgment day is coming. You have also told us that your Messiah is the one in whom we may take refuge from judgment. Help us to trust in him. Thank you that Jesus is the cornerstone of the church, and that as believers we are part of the superstructure of the spiritual temple you are constructing. Increase our faith in these times, Father. Help us to keep your promises in our minds. Thank you for our firm foundation. In Jesus' name, amen.

"So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Messiah Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit." - Ephesians 2:19-22
