A Double Portion of Your Spirit

2 Kings 2

H - "When they had crossed [the Jordan], Elijah said to Elisha, 'Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.' And Elisha said, 'Please let there be a double portion of your Spirit on me.'" - 2 Kings 2:9

E - Elisha has followed Elijah as a disciple for many years, and now God will take up Elijah to heaven. Elijah asks Elisha what he wants before he, Elijah, is taken up. Elijah wisely asks for a double portion of Elijah's spirit. Probably this is a reference to the Holy Spirit who has for many years empowered Elijah. Elisha wants a double portion of the Holy Spirit for his own life and ministry.

A - Father, am I allowed to have a double portion of your Holy Spirit? I know I am baptised by, indwelt by, and sealed with the Spirit as a believer in Jesus. But what about a double portion of the filling of the Spirit?

R - "The filling of the Spirit is definitely available to every believer in my Son. Study the Scriptures. See how important the filling of the Spirit is in the lives of the apostles and their associates in Acts. All the imperatives of the New Testament picture how a Spirit-filled believer is to live in this dark, evil world. Fulfil all the New Testament commands through the filling of Spirit. At times I do give an extra filling of the Spirit. Usually it is when my servants are preaching my gospel in a bold fashion. So be filled by the Spirit with the fulness of my Son. Honour and follow him."

P - Father, give me as much of your Spirit as I am worthy to receive. Help me to follow my master, Jesus, as Elisha followed his master, Elijah. May we multiply many disciples of Jesus here in Dunedin. I pray for more disciples around us, who will be filled to the brim with your Spirit. Amen.
