1 Corinthians 11
"But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Messiah, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Messiah is God" (1 Cor 11:3).
In God's economy, there is a chain of command. God is the head of Messiah Jesus, his Son. Jesus is the head of every man. And the husband is head of is wife. This chain of command is good and in line with the nature of things as God has designed it. Those in headship are to lead as God leads, and those in submission must submit as Jesus submits to his Father. Servant leadership and humble submission make for good order and productivity.
Messiah Jesus is my head. I am to humbly submit to him. I am also to lead Averil, my wife, and she is to humbly submit to me. Our children are to humbly submit to us as parents. Respect for authority is an important aspect of how God has designed us to work together in harmony. Those in authority have a big responsibility, and they are not to abuse their authority for their own advantage.
The main priority of our family right now is setting up Averil for healing from cancer. It is my job to make family decisions that tend toward this goal. She needs my help in this. She needs my leadership. And I need wisdom from the Father. I need to be her best friend, advisor, and encourager.
Father, as a servant of Jesus and leader of Averil and our family, help me to be wise and faithful in how I lead. May we as a family make good decisions that contribute to Averil's healing. May I do everything I can as a leader to set up Averil for success. Show me what I need to do and help me to follow through. In Jesus' name, amen.
