That We Might Understand the Things Freely Given Us by God

1 Corinthians 2

"Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual" (1 Cor 2:12-13).

As baby Christians, we have a lot to learn. Thankfully, the Father gives us the Holy Spirit so that we may begin to understand all the wonderful free gifts the Father has given to us by his grace. The apostles and their associates have told us all about these free gifts in the New Testament. If we are spiritual, that is, if we are walking by the Spirit, abiding in Messiah Jesus, and living in fellowship with the Father, we are able to receive the spiritual truths the apostles communicated long ago in Scripture.

As believers, we are to have an inner desire to grow in our understanding of God. If we do want to grow in our understanding of him, it is essential for us to live in close fellowship with the Trinity and to be diligent students of the Bible. Studying the Bible is to be a spiritually transforming and edifying practice. If we do not keep in step with the Spirit and set aside time each day to read and meditate on Scripture, we cannot grow in our understanding of God, and our advance to spiritual maturity will be slow and unsteady.

Father, give us a heart to want to know and understand you more and more. May we hunger and thirst for the deep things of God. May we not be distracted from Bible study and learning about the free gifts you have given to us. May we be spiritual people ready to take in spiritual truths. In Jesus' name, amen.
