They Refused to Love the Truth

2 Thessalonians 2:9-12

"The coming of the lawless one is by the activity of Satan with all power, false signs, and wonders, and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness" (2 Thess 2:9-12).

The Thessalonian believers have heard that the day of the Lord Jesus has already come (v. 2). But Paul says no way to that. The man of lawlessness, the son of destruction, must come first (v. 3). When this person comes, he will deceive the world, especially those who refuse to love the truth of the gospel message of Jesus (v. 10). If we want to be saved, we have to love the truth and be truth-seekers.

Personally, I want to be more committed to seeking truth. We live in the information age, and the information we are able to access is infinite. But most of this information is a distraction from the truth. Many in our postmodern age don't believe in truth, so they aren't seeking it. It is the job of the church to assert and defend the truth. We believe truth is to be found in a person--the Lord Jesus Christ. Seeking the truth is vital for us as human beings. If we don't seek the truth and believe the truth, we will be condemned (v. 12).

Father, I pray that the next generation will have more truth-seekers than previous generations. Many baby boomers and gen Xers have given up on the idea of truth. May the next generation be different. Thank you that the gospel message is true and available for all. Thank you for being a God of truth. Help us to be truth-seekers. In Jesus' name, amen.
